A chalky, matte white area on a tooth may be an early sign of dental caries. At this stage, minerals have been lost from the enamel, but the surface has not yet broken down. When the causes are addressed early, the lesion can often be arrested and may become less visible.

Why white spots appear

Common risk factors include plaque, frequent sugary snacks or drinks, and ineffective brushing. Similar-looking marks may also result from enamel hypoplasia or fluorosis, so a photograph is not enough for diagnosis and home treatment should not be started at random.

How the dentist can stop progression

·    assess whether the lesion is active and evaluate the child’s overall caries risk;

·    improve brushing technique and recommend age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste;

·    apply professional fluoride or remineralizing products when indicated;

·    review snacking habits and schedule follow-up examinations.

Why early care matters

If mineral loss continues, the enamel surface may collapse and form a cavity. Preventive care alone will then be insufficient. Early assessment gives the child the best chance of avoiding drilling and preserving healthy tooth structure.
