Crooked teeth in a child are not only a cosmetic concern. Crowded teeth are harder to clean thoroughly, and an uneven bite may affect chewing, the pronunciation of some sounds, and the way pressure is distributed across the teeth.

Why bite problems develop

Tooth position is influenced by genetics, jaw growth, and the timing of primary tooth loss and permanent tooth eruption. Prolonged thumb or pacifier sucking, tongue thrusting, and habitual mouth breathing may also play a role. A child who often keeps the mouth open should have both the bite and nasal breathing assessed.

When to see an orthodontist

An initial orthodontic evaluation is generally recommended no later than age seven, when both primary and permanent teeth are present. An earlier visit is reasonable if parents notice a crossbite, open bite, marked crowding, facial asymmetry, early loss of a primary tooth, or persistent lip-biting habits.

What an early check-up can achieve

A consultation does not mean that braces must start immediately. The orthodontist may simply monitor jaw development, protect space for an unerupted tooth, or recommend treatment at a more suitable stage. Early assessment helps families understand what needs attention and when.

Pediatric orthodontic consultations are available at BabyDent in Penza.
