Prosthetic treatment for teenagers differs from adult care. Permanent teeth have erupted, but some roots, gingival margins, the bite, and the jaws may still be developing. The dentist must restore function now while preserving the option to modify treatment as growth continues.

When a teenager may need a prosthetic restoration

Treatment may be required after extensive decay, dental trauma, developmental enamel or dentine defects, a missing permanent tooth, or root canal treatment. Planning may involve a pediatric dentist, orthodontist, and prosthodontist.

Why provisional plastic or resin crowns are often used

Teenagers are often treated with provisional crowns made from acrylic or composite resin. The crown protects a weakened tooth and restores its shape, appearance, and chewing function. It can be adjusted or replaced if the bite or gingival margin changes. It requires follow-up and is not intended as a lifelong restoration.

A provisional crown is not appropriate in every case. A direct composite restoration may be sufficient. For a missing tooth, options can include a temporary removable prosthesis, a resin-bonded bridge, retention of a primary tooth, or orthodontic space closure.

Why definitive crowns and implants may be postponed

The decision depends on more than chronological age. The dentist assesses skeletal growth, root development, bone, gingiva, and occlusion. An implant placed during active growth can later become infraoccluded relative to adjacent teeth. Conservative interim treatment is therefore often preferred until growth completion is confirmed.

What treatment involves

·    clinical examination, photographs, and imaging when indicated;

·    treatment of decay or the consequences of trauma;

·    a scan or impression and fabrication of an interim restoration;

·    follow-up of the bite, gingiva, and supporting tooth.
